1963 Ford Galaxie 500

Question:
Installed power breaks on a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500. Do they make 14 inch wheels that will work with power brakes? Any suggestions?

Response(s)
Power brakes should NOT make a difference. 14" wheels will fit. However, if you added disk brakes, then no.

dearborn classics had a disc brake conversion for 14 in wheels, power brake add on is easy just get the correct booster there all over.

if you are using disc brakes, u can use 14" rims from a 1980 ford as they used this combo..

63 Ford Galaxie

Question:
I have a 63 fastback with a 390. The starter needs to be replaced and I cannot get clearance to pull the starter out. Anybody else have problems with this and any hints to make it easier?

Response(s)
usually they can be wiggled out, but sounds like the exhaust system may have been replaced at one time and now the pipe is too close to the engine block, preventing removal. may have to disconnect the pipe to get starter out. can't see why it would not come out otherwise.

1964 Galaxie 500xl

Question:
Is there a wrong way to install front springs on a 64 Galaxie 500XL? Want to make sure I don't put them back the wrong way.

Response(s)
no they are the same on both ends.no wrong way to put them in

yes you can put them in upside down, the top of the spring is flat and finishes with a taper, the bottom ends in the termination of a coil, there is a recess in the lower control arm that it fits into, there is a rubber spring silencer that goes in the topa that fits around the spring relief, if you look closely at you springs you will notice that they will only stand up on the ground on one end, that is the top.

there is atop and bottom plus a rubber insulater get a shop manual on line or youll learn the hard way

1967 Ford Galaxie 500

Question:
I have a 67 Galaxie and I am trying to remove the rear brake drums. I have adjusted the shoes all the way in and still can't get the drums off. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Response(s)
If you've already tried a drum puller and it didn't come off I would do the following. a)remove the brake cylinder bleeder screw just in case some pressure is keeping the shoes out against the drum. b) loosen the emergency cable adjuster to that wheel. Sometimes the cable is so tight that it will keep the shoe out and against the drum c) grind off the heads of the hold down pins on the backing plate for the primary and secondary shoes. This will free the shoes up and might let the drum off.

1964 Galaxie

Question:
How many engines where used in the Galaxie?

Response(s)
Ken, In 1964 the basic Ford came standard with a big 6 cylinder 223 CI, after that all the rest are V8's, the 289 is standard for big Fords, the 260 is available but not for the Galaxie, it's too small in HP, but the same block. 289 352 only a 4 barrel carb and hipo in the 1964 390 427 all motors except the 352 and 427 in 1964 came with either 2 or 4 barrel carb setup. There are several different versions of horsepower in each model engine. There are dual 2 barrels, dual 4 barrel carbs 3 2 barrel carbs. All came with auto trans or 3 or 4 speed trans on the floor or 3 speed in the tree / steering column.

Question:
Does anyone know of any vendors that produce any exterior trim parts for a 66 Galaxie? Also car I bought came with buckets, console and backseat of another car. Originally had bench. As far as interchange of seats go, anyone know if seats can be swapped with any other model?

Response(s)
Hi, Stuart. You can check out dearbornclassics.com, or macsautoparts.com. They might have a few of the trim parts you need, but the selection is limited. As a fellow 66 Galaxie owner, I can tell you from experience, that trim parts are just hard to come by, other than small bits and pieces. If your buckets and console are from a 65/66 Galaxie, hang on to 'em! They're equally tough to find. Good luck!

1961 Ford fairlane

Question:
Can I put a 289 hp with a fmx trans in a 1961 Ford Fairlane that came with a 223 cubic inch 6 cylinder without doing any cutting or welding?

Response(s)
Eddie, your 1961 Ford Fairlane is really a Galaxie and the last year the Fairlane is a fullsized car. The 289 should bolt to the FMX, but make sure its the 3 speed auto / CruisOmatic which should have the green dot drive for second gear. You may need to swap out the bell housing from a 289 since the main V8 in 1961 was the 292 Y block or the 352 and the 390. The chassis from 1960 to 1964 is the same basic car but the trans mount for the standard 6 may need to be moved and you might find the driveshaft is to long or to short. You can pretty much bolt any Ford V8 into the spot but the trans mount will be different for the V8 setup. Best thing to do is find a donor car, it can be a wagon, a 4 door, any model Galaxie with a V8 from 1961 to 1964, 1963 1963 will have 289, 352, 390.

1965 Galaxie 500 xl

Question:
My husband has a 65 Galaxie 500xl. There was a sign we had found in the car. It was a banner type paper printed sign that read “Need help” “send for gas” “out of gas” Or something similar along these lines. My husband has since lost the paper, and we have asked EVERYWHERE if they have ever heard of this “help” sign that came with the car. Wanted to throw it out there and see if anyone has seen or heard of this sign. I am interested in purchasing an original one if someone can send me in the right direction. If you have any tips or information for me, please email me at kaarinasimpson@gmail.com Sincerly wife on a mission, Kaarina

Response(s)
Ina, what you refer to came in the Ford owners manual for the later 1960 models Fords. I have a few in the later 60 and early 70's models, it was probably added by someone who had a later year Galaxie or Ford. It is standard issue by Ford Motor Company, it should say FMC or something on the paper. Contact Dearborn Classics they may have some.

Question:
Can I run 15"x6" rims with out any head aches?

Response(s)
Marty, the 1963 Galaxie came optional with 15 inch rims. Many run 15x7 and bigger in the rear and run 14x7 in the front to get that rake look. The real thing you have to watch is to make sure you do not run to tall of a tire, this will change the speedo and gear ratio. It can be done and you can really stuff the rear with some wide tires. I run 60 series on the rear of my 60 and 64 Galaxies.

You will be find with 15x6 many run 15 in the rear and 14 in the front.

I believe the windshield is the same. The hood is different. The control arms will fit also and most likely the 68 will have disc brakes. I would be interested in the rest of the 68 if it is close to Memphis area.

Question:
How many gas tank sender unit seals should there be on a 63 Galaxie? Mine had 2 when I removed the unit from the tank. They were back to back to each other. One was a slightly smaller section than the other, although very similar in diameter.

Normally there is one, but it may have leaked or who knows what. Replace it with a single gasket and some gasket sealant that is oblivious to fuel.

1966 Galaxie 4dr HT 352

Question:
My son and I are restoring his recently purchased Galaxie and are working on the engine. We gave the intake manifold a bath to clean it up for fresh engine paint. The engine now acts as if it is not getting fuel to the spark plugs. Is the intake filter ? - porous like material that sits directly below the carb replaceable - or is it even needed? Most intakes don't have this - do they? Can I buy a replacment? Is there a good way to clean it or is a replacement needed? Thanks in advance. Rich D.

Response(s)
You and your son should go back to playing with dolls. It sounds like you know nothing about cars.

I BELEVE YOU ARE REFERING TO THR SPACER PLATE IT HELPS INSULATE THE CARB FROM HEAT ALSO HAS A VACUMPORT RUNNING OUT THE BACK SIDE, IT MUST BE INSTALED CORECTLY OR YOU WILL HAVE A MAJOR VACM LEAK AS FOR THE CRACK ABOUT PLAYING WITH DOLLS FORGET HIM

buy a chiltons motormanual for appropiate years I picked one up at rumage sale for 3 bucks, will have specs and how to do info for your project

Working on a car is dirty work. I hate to say this man, but you really shouldn't have washed that engine, if done improperly it can cause a lot of problems, If it is in running condition I would suggest having a mechanic look at it to determine why it is not starting. It's greasy work and washing it is really making it harder for the engine as the grease helps it operate and keeps it lubricated. hope I helped.

Question:
Looking to install six belts in my 63 Galaxie sedan. It is my understanding that there are mounting locations for two in the front and none in the back. Where can I look for more information on this install. Is it even possible to put six belts in this car?

Response(s)
The 1963 Galaxie 500 did have optional rear seat belts and there should be bolt holes under the rear seat, you will need to pull the bottom of the back seat up, it just kind of pops out by lifting and pushing it backwoods. You might just find it has rear seat belts already, many people stuffed the rear belts down under the seats. If the belts are not there you should see bolt locations on the floor pan. Just remove the bottom rear seat first.

Question:
I have a 1969 Galaxie with 390 engine, is it possible to add ac to it?

Response(s)
Maury, in 1969 Ford offered AC as optional equipment. You can either try and find a system in the junk yard or get a custom AC system from Classic Auto Air, which might be a better option in todays world. Your 1969 390 would have the same AC system on all full sized 1969 1970 Mercurys and Fords with the 390. So you could use all the brackets and mounts and compressors.

Response(s)
Ed, you will need to remove the door panel and make an adjustment to the 2 bump stops that are on each window. They are out of adjustment and can easily be unbolted and realigned. Some have rubber on them that wears out. The only other reason this woould happen if the window is off the track which you would see with the door panel off. Good luck

Valve cover and air cleaner color for a 352 cubic inch is? I know the block and intake to be black. I have seen pale or powder blue (like Ford body color), gold and argent silver but I thought those colors were designated to 390's and 406's and Ford blue yet thought that came later. The correct color and where to purchase would be appreciated. Thanks.

Response(s)
Your 1962 Galaxie 500 with a 352 would be a black block and blue valve covers and blue air cleaner, you can use the blue that is known as Ford blue, Dearborn Classics would carry this color. Ford engines are black up to 1964, in 1965 they go to the all Ford blue. Another area to watch is the front valance between the bumper and grille should be silver or gray, many people paint this body color on many year cars, it is silver or gray to blend in with the chrome.

Response(s)
Most 68 Galaxies and LTDs had disc brakes and they work good. I would assume the spindles would bolt right up. I have also used 71 LTD spindles on a 64 using the right ball joints and they worked really good. Just make sure the ball joints have the right taper angle for the spindle and bolt up correctly to the control arms. You have to use at least 15" rims with either of these.

We used 1969 discs have had no trouble for over 10years. Was very easy job.

Ford Galaxie 500?

Question:
I looking at buying a 63 Galaxie 500 Conv. from a guy and you look at the car and see that it's a 500 by the emblems and the interior but the guy he bought it from said he took off the Vin/Data tag when he painted it and lost it. The title the man gave him has a VIN number of 3G69Z183879 and I looked it up and thats a title for a 500XL Conv and not a 500. The VIN tag under the hood on top of the firewall by the hinge on the passenger side had a metal plate that look like it was tack welded over the top of it. He broke that off but water had got in between and rusted it so bad you can't make out the numbers. My question is this. 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 2 dr convertible

Question:
Is there a difference between a 2 door hardtop door/window and a convertible door/window? I just purchased a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible. The top when up had gaps where you could see inside the car. I took it to a reputable place to have a top put on. They looked at it and told me that the cables were missing and once they put a new top on, they will install new cables and that will bring it tight and you won't see inside the car anymore when top was up. They called me today and said there was an issue and that once the new top was installedthere was still a gap, but not as much where you could see inside. He said for me to come and take a look at it and he thought that the car had maybe a 2 door hartop window or door in it, when it should be a convertible door or window. I have to go today, 1025-2011 and pick it up. I haven't paid for it all. They charged me $1,500.00 for the top and back plastic window and installation. I thought that was high especially when it looks like the tops only run around $300.00 new, even from Dearborn. I don't want to pay $1,500.00 for a new top if it looks almost the same as the other one. That is the only reason I had them put a new top on is because of that gap space between the top and the top of the window/door. The top that was on it prior wasn't that bad, just a few places that were stitched and the cable ends were broke so you couldn't draw the cable together to tighten it. I think he's giving me a line of bull when he said it's because of the wrong door or window on the car.

Question:
I have a 62 or 63 Galaxie hardtop body only from the friewall back no glass or door. RUST FREE zero rust or bondo. any interest and what might it be worth. Also a few boxes of parts window cranks heater motor not sure whats there.

Response(s)
Ken.. There is a pretty big difference between 1962 and 1963. The 63 64 are more the same than the 62 63. A 1962 or 1963 Hardtop would be a square roof and not the fastback style. The 1962 will have a rounded rear quarter where the 1963 has large round taillight housing molded right into the rear quarters. Best thing to do is a yahoo search on the image page to find which one you have. The 62 square roof is not as popular as the 63 so knowing the years is important. If its a rolling chassis that also adds to it. The 62 and 63 would not have much interchangeable body parts, the 61 and 62 share much as do the 63 and 64. Best guess would be about $200 depending on which and what parts, could be up too $1,500.00 but might be pushing it. All depends whats there.

Just do a Google search for Ford Vin Decoder then put in your Vin # and it will tell you the year and other info about the car.

A good Vin decoder is called, Decode This do a google search on it and put in your Vin#

1968 Ford Galaxie XL Convertible

Question:
Who rebuilds the '68 Galaxie XL convertible master window switches, please? All windows now are lubed and go up and down smoothly, but only when 12v is applied directly to the motors. A new relay makes no difference. The switch is the last piece in the puzzle. Any experience out there? Thanks, Dan in Austin

Response(s)
I'm not sure if the 'relay' you are talking about is the same thing as the 'circuit breaker' I'm going to talk about. On my '67 LTD, the cicuit breaker is on the firewall, drivers side. I took the cover off of it and found it was like a set of contact points connected to a small type of coil. I guess when something overheated, this small coil would either charge or discharge and the points would pop open, breaking the cicuit. I found one time, a little piece of debris, almost like a grain of sand was holding those points open. After sanding the points smooth, I reinstalled the cover, sealing it to insure no debris could get in. I've had good luck with it lately, but if my windows(all of them) don't work, I give that cover a few good taps either to dislodge debris or Recover the connection in those points. Good Luck

1964 Galaxie Fastback 289

Question:
I have a 64' fastback that I'm planing a frame swap on and I would like to know if a 64'convertible X frame would fit under a fastback? I would like to go with the x frame for more support and I've tracked down a conv. car in my area for a good price, I just need to know if it will work before I buy.

Response(s)
The only real difference between the hardtop and the convertible should be the convertible crossmember. You might want to see how bad the frame is on the convertible before actually making the switch. You might find your best bet might be to cut out the X member and weld to your original frame. Either is going to be a lot of work and I think the best condition frame wins but I also like knowing the original frmae is there if you want matching numbers. The convertible must be pretty rough if its a parts car and they do rust and rott pretty good compared to the hardtop. I guess it all comes down to money and time.

1967 Ford Galaxie 500

Question:
I have a 1967 Galaxie 500, I was told that it was 1 of a few built with a 410 my VIN shows 390 how can I find out? VIN # 7U55H124073

Response(s)
there were no galaxies built with the 410 engine . the 410 was only uesd in the mercury cars . your engine has been a non factory install

the only true way to find out if it is a 410 cid is to pull ahead and measure the bore and stroke . the 390 is 4.05 bore and 3.78 stroke . the 410 is 4.05 bore and 4.98 stroke

to measure the stroke you will need to move the piston all the way down to the bottom of the cylinder and measure the depth then move it all the way up to the top of the stroke and measure the distance from the top of the piston to the block lip . then take the differnces between the two measurements and that will be the stroke

I have checked that. It has a 428 crank witch is the crank thay use in the 410. Thear is no engine # but a c on the back of the block. It is a 410. What I want 2 Know is how I can find out If it was bilt that way

Going by the Vin # on your car 7=1967,U=Assembly Plant Louisville,KY 55=Galaxie 500 Fastback, H=390cid 270hp 2BBL carb with 9.5:1 compresion and the 124073 is the serial # that means your car was the 24073 car made. So if you have a 410 in it now it was added latter because your car left the factory with a 390.

I recently purchased a 67 Galaxie fastback. The reverse lights don't work. How do I get to the reverse light? And is there a fuse in line for them?

Response(s)
Reverse lights run thru the neutral safety switch. Switch could out of adjustment. A owners manual should show you the fuses. Or better get a service manual or wiring diagram. Try this link: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/1968-ford-galaxie-133326.html

1964 Ford Fairlane Two Door

Question:
What model Ford exterior driver side door handles with push buttons will fit a 1964 Ford Fairlane?

Response(s)
1963 and 1964 will interghange

The door handles for a 2 door and a 4 door are the same on most models. You can you a 4 door set and the handles from the right side should fit the front or back door, just left or right is different. I have used wagons and 4 doors cars to get extra door handles at junk yards for years. Also remember the Mercury Comet has probably got the same handles. I beleive these are reproduced.

1965 Ford Galaxie 2 door

Question:
Do the fenders and windshield from a 1966 Ford Galaxie 2 door, fit on a 1965 Ford Galaxie 2 door?

Response(s)
yes the 65 and 66 parts will interchange but not 67 or later

63-74 Interchange Manual says they are different. Can Anyone explain. They look close but is the body design different? I own a 66 Gal conv.

Yes, they will probably fit. However, they physically look different. Google images of both to see the difference. 65 is more squared off around the headlights.

They are actually different because the 1965 is a square style at the corner of the fenders where the 1966 is more rounded. the fenders might lineup but they are not the same fenders.

1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL

Question:
I have a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with a 352. I need to buy a new power steering pump. I need to know what the difference is in a rear mount and a front mount power steering pump. How can you tell the difference?

Response(s)
I have never heard of a rear or front pump, there is 2 different styles or setups for 1964 big block cars depending in most cases if you have AC or not. AC cars have the reservoir mounted on the drivers side inner fender and most non AC cars have the reservoir mounted on top of the pump. The pumps are the same just one bolts the power steering fluid reservoir on top and another on the inner fender. Best thing to do is remove the pump and take it to the parts house if possible so you can compare. 390 / 352 pumps are the same ones. I owm a 1964 XL with a 352.

1963 Galaxie 500; 352; two barrel. New [mechanical] fuel pump and filter, reworked carburetor. Car starts and runs better than it did 55,000 miles ago when it was new. PROBLEM: When car sits a week or so it will not start w/o a little priming through the air filter/carb. Have checked for external leaks and tightened line connects. Any ideas.

Response(s)
bad carb. try a different carb should fix the problem

It is actually a common problem with todays gas because it evaporates very quickly. In my 1964 Galaxie I run Mobil, or Shell, Chevron Premium fuel. You are probably running regular which should be ok, just the gas evaporates very quickly these days.

Question:
Does the 1964 Ford Galaxie have a drain plug for its gas tank?

Response(s)
no . if you want to drain the tank you will need to unhook the fuel line and gauge wire from the front of the tank then remove the straps and lower the tank from the car then drain it from the fill tube.

Or leave it in the car and siphon the gas out with a garden hose into a large bucket.

I presently havre ther tank out of my 64 and it has a small drain plug way up in the corner opposite the filler ??

1965 Galaxie 500 ltd

Question:
Hi. I recently replaced the 390 engine with a 351 drive train on my '65 Galaxie. Problem is that when I press on the brakes, the car engine dies off. It just appears to choke and switches off. I have repalced the brake booster, overhauled the carb, changed the plug leads, and still have the same issue. Please suggest. I want to fix this on my own, so a mech shop is not an option.

Response(s)
On my 68, I had a master cylinder start leaking out of the rear when you depressed the brakes and it was sucking brake fluid into the engine. It also ruined the diaphram in the booster. Check if the back is wet. Good luck.

A friend had had this problem when he switched to a 1970 390 in his 64 Country Sedan. The problem was in the intake manifold because of all the vaccum lines from the 1970. We had to switch to an early 64 intake to get it to work correctly. I would suggest you check your vacuum lines to make sure you are feeding off the right one, you maybe taking vacuum away from the engine and you should have a vacuum line going to the trans also.

Question:
I have a 1971 Ford Galaxie 500 that is set up for small block and I want to put a big block 460 in it what would I have to change and were can I get what I need.

Response(s)
you will need to change motor mounts , trans and mount ,cross member also the radiator . you can get the mounts from crites auto parts

sorry i ment crites preformance parts.com

The best thing to do if possible is to find a donor car. You could use a 1971 1972 Mercury Marquis, Monterey, Galaxie, LTD sedans or station wagons. You could even use a Lincoln Continental Sedan. All are full sized, of course the trick is to find a complete one. A donor car will provide you with the engine all the crossmembers and transmission along with driveshaft and any wiring you may need. Best bet maybe a junk yard. Takes some work but it can be done.

Thanks

Question:
Anyone out there put headers on a '68 with a 390? How did they fit? I would like a set but don't want to have to hammer or saw! Thanks

Response(s)
The guys over at fordpowertrain.com made a set for my 67 LTD with a 390 and they fit perfectly. You might wanna give them a holler.

I have 2 68 LTDs with 390s. I used the short headers from fordpowertrain.com on the most recent and the Hooker SuperComps on the other one. The Hookers use a 2 piece pipe going to either 6 or 7 cylinder and they are 1.75" and long tubes. We got them in with the engine in the car, but it was a lot of twisting and trying.

The 1966 Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop is the 2 door fastback. It can be referred as either. That was the only way the 2 door hardtop came in 1966 was as the fastback style and shares the same styling que as the convertible.

Question:
We are restoring a 1966 Ford LTD 4 door hardtop. There is a vent along the out side of the rear window that has two drains that run through the car behind the rear seat and exit under the car. The rubber drains have deteriorated. Where can I find replacements?

Its called Silent Flo. Id love to repair mine to see if it really works. I pulled the knob out and I felt a slight change in rpm from the vaccum canister opening, but my hoses are dry rotted too.

The 64-71 Thunderbirds have the same system and those hoses are available at Thunderbird parts houses, but I don't know if they're the same. I just finished restoring a 66 LTD 4-door hardtop. I used my old hoses as a pattern and made new ones out of an inner tube and stapled them together. Email and we can talk.

brasso will work or you can use 3000 grit wet/dry sand paper if its real bad . if you use the 3000 grit paper use it with dish soap in the water in a bucket and keep the paper wet .

Quadruple zero (0000) steel wool from any auto parts store. Except NAPA, they are useless. Works AMAZINGLY.

After you use 3000 grit sandpaper, go to auto parts store and buy some "never dull pads". It comes in a can and smells like kerosene.

For a 68 LTD 2dr hardtop, there should be a tag at the passenger side of the dashboard. It is actually attached to the body. If you have the front fenders off, there is a metal plate on each end of the cowl vent box (where the windshield wiper linkage is) and firewall that has it stamped on it.

Out of the other 2 pins, is one of them a ground.

Question:
What is the trick to installing a fuel pump without removing the PS pump and getting the shaft under the cam lobe?

Response(s)
You can push the PS pump to the side if you loosen the bolts on the mounting brackets a bit, to give you more room, also if you can rotate and take off the fuel filter canister ,this will give you some more flexabilty to re install the pump. Once you get the bolts for the pump started by holding the pump onto the block to depress the arm, tightening them up will pull the pump into place.

Hi i own a 67 Galaxie 500 4 door with 289 engine in original condition. I found him a few weeks ago in a container from a old lady. She has forgotten the car since 15 years. Brakes were frozen but first key turn it runs :) now my question: I found in the trunk a little vent...looks like a air vent...for what is it...it has 2 hoses and they go in the floor. Sorry for the maybe stupid question but it's my first (and last) Galaxie. I love this car and I will ship it end of the month to Germany where I originaly come from. I like to know as much as I can about my "baby". Cheers from Vancouver Andy.

Some 68 Galaxies had a hot air rear window defroster that was mounted in the trunk and blew up through the package tray at the window. Just a guess. You could send a picture.

1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible

Question:
I have a 64 Galaxie convert. Only drive it a few times a year. Last year I drove at dusk and turned on my headlights but to my dismay they did not work. I tried my brights and they worked... all 4 went on... but no low beams by themselves. Checked for fuse but found none. Just drove the car for the first time today 1 year later... now there are no brights. Parks work.... tail lights work... brakes work... dash & interior works...but no headlights. I found the fuse box under the dash on the firewall above the brake pedal, but no fuse for "headlights". I looked up from below to see of there was a fuse mounted to the headlight switch like my 1959 ford... but saw none. I tried to follow the wire to see if I could find a fuse somewhere, but traced it all the way to the headlights and found none. Where is the headlight fuse on a 64 ford Galaxie? And couldn't there be one fuse for both low beams and brights? Why might all 4 brights have worked when my low beams did not? (Could both low beams coincidentally burned out at the exact same time?) Each of the 4 lights work when jumper wire tested. Please advise.

Question:
I am having my Ford restored and I think this guy is cheating me. How long does it take to install wire harness and run wires to respective locations? How much should a standard carburetor cost with kit and gaskets for Galaxie 500 with 427 engine?

Response(s)
If it is a body off restoration, it shouldn't take too much time to run a few wires for the cars electric powered components......It's pretty simple. replacing all engine gaskets is very difficult as you have to take the engine apart to get to them, so that will definately be an engine rebuild and should be priced as such. As far as restoring goes though, it is really better to do it alone (or with a few knowledgeable buddies) as some mechanics are very unreliable. I know because my brother is a mechanic. lol, hope I helped.

If you had the transmission rebuilt make sure they put the correct torque converter. The 351 Windsor was a mid-year engine for the 69 Galaxie and not everyone knows the correct parts without some help. I had the same thing happen to me. Luckily I had written my name and things on the old torque converter so they were able to find the correct one.

Try a hotter thermostat water may be flowing to fast through radiator to be cooled at highway speeds

jim also check your rad. hoses. they might be soft and suck in under pressure, that will make it run hot on the hwy.

So far I have uncovered a large black wire, a small black wire with a red stripe and 2 white wires with black stripes. I really need a wiring diagram or some information so I can get rid of the birds nest and start over. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom

Question:
I have a 1967 Galaxie 500 and cannot locate the turn signal flasher. I have located the 4 way flasher under the dash along the steering column. The car has factory air, and I have taken the vent hoses off and reached up under the dash but still can't locate it. I took off the dash panel looking for a hole to reach in but also no luck. Any help out there? Also, what carburetor is on the 1967 390 V-8 2 bbl. as it came out of the factory? Thanks!

Response(s)
Probably an Autolite 2100 Carb. Flasher should be the typical two terminal flasher found on virtually all cars of that era and should be easily located just under the dash hear the steering column.

1972 aussie assembled Galaxie LTD 4 dr

Question:
I have a 1972 Galaxie LTD with the factory instrument cluster. Considering it is a LTD it is extremely basic, horizontal bar speedo, no tacho, fuel gauge and everything else is an idiot light. Can anyone help with advice on an upgrade from another car like the brougham? I can't find adequate photos anywhere. Is there a better instrument cluster out there that would fit? It is a fair amount of work to make my own and being an old car there is quite a few other things out there that need doing first, but if there was an upgrade dash that I could fit easily with only a few wires that would be outstanding. There weren't a lot of other Fords of that era out in Aussie at that time so looking for donor cars isn't as easy as the US. I look forward to any help I can get. Cheers

Response(s)
look at the t-bird or torino , mercury, cougar, galaie , or possible a lincoln

Hi, I have 72 Galaxie 500, and used to have a 72 LTD, both have the same 'basic' instruments you describe: linear speedometer and a fuel gauge. The rest is idiotlights. From the sales brochures I have, I think these cars never came with any more "sporty" gauge packages, so it looks like a do-it-yourself job... You could use one of those column-mounted tachos and an under-dash bracket for 2 or 3 warning gauges. Cheers, Werner (Belgium)

1962 Ford Galaxie 500 with 352 Engine

Question:
Oil pressure light flashs/flickers much of the time especially on left hand turns and at acceleration between 30 and 50 mph. Is this a problem and is there a cure?

Response(s)
First, you really need to determine if there is a mechanical or electrical problem. You can either install a oil pressure gauge and determine if you have sufficient oil pressure or you can go ahead and change the oil sending unit. I have noticed in my experience that if the light comes on it is either there is no oil pressure or a defective switch. If there is no pressure, It would have been preceeded by a lot of valve rattling. If you have not heard this, then I would say replace the switch, but I have to list all possibilities. Also check the condition of the wire that runs along the engine to the switch. If it is frayed and touching the block it will also turn the oil light on. hope this helps

1965 galaxie 500 xl, 352, 4 barrel, had same problem, flickering light, bought manual pressure gauge, installed it, at 55 run about 37 cold, about 30 after highway runs, only about 7 at idle after heat up, been this way over 6 months, from what i understand it is high volume low pressure oil pump, i beleive if i replaced oil pump i would end up replacing oil seals, o i have left it alone, btw, daily driver of 60+ miles/commuting

65-66 are the same. You can buy the vacuum booster at "Macsautoparts" (online) or "autokrafters" (online) they make most repro parts for old Galaxies. Question:
I'm installing a new gas tank and sending unit into my 1963 Galaxie, and the o-ring which goes between the tank and the flange of the sending unit will not fit on the flat ID of the tank. This means the o-ring will not seal properly. I could section a piece out of the o-ring, but that introduces a path for the fuel to leak. I thought about just pot lucking a number of o-rings until I find the right one, but wanted to check and see if anyone had any suggestions before going this route. Thanks in advance.

Response(s)
you will need a seal that fits or it will leak like a siv. try dearborn classics.com they have them

How about you bring in the sending unit to a NAPA autoparts or a autopart store that carries assorted O-rings. I have done this in the recent past with my rigs. They will certainly have the right diameter and thickness for pennies instead of the S&H from a parts house

My car has the FX/MX auto trans. The trans is filled to the full mark (hot). After the car sits for a few days the trans is way over full. When you start it fluid runs out of the "vent" tube on the right side of the trans until it warms up. If you start and place in drive until warm, no fluid leak. Shifts OK when on the road and does not slip.

Response(s)
drian fluid and refill to factory specs. should stop the problem . sounds like it is over full or pump is not working right

Thanks, did that, new gasket and filter. If the car sits overnight no problem, fluid on full mark. anytime you let it sit for say a week the stick reads well over full and when you start it fluid runs from that drain vent tube. Drop it in drive and let it warm up and there is no leak. fluid is on the full mark. Let is sit for a week and same thing happens. Car runs great and trans shifts great. Could this be a pump seal or something letting the converter drain back?

Why won't my car go into gear? I have a 1966 Ford Galaxie with a 3 speed on the column. The car had been sitting in a pasture for 15ish years and I managed to get the car running but it won't go into gear.

the clutch is probably stuck

since car hasn't ran for that long the tranney needs to be drained flushed out also cooler lines and where these lines go in & out of your radiator. old fluid gets gummy won't allow parts to function. these trans. need to be very clean, don't forget new filter screen.

Ford offered "in dash" A/C as well as dealer installed hang on by Ford including a unit that looked much like factory that went across the entire pass. side.

I would replace the tank. I doubt it is the only rust/ leak you are going to see out of a 40+ year old tank If the cost is to much, a quality gas tank restoring kit is available, you have to have the hole fixed first, then clean seal the tank while it is out of the car

1965 is year specific. There is no reproduction available. However, you can use a 1966 tank, which is available. But, you have to use the 66 fill tube, 66 tank straps, & 66 sending unit. There are companies that restore gas tanks as well as DIY options.

you want to look for a 390 4v fe engine and toploader 4 speed . the 390 will be easy to find and cost around 500.00 dollars or less but the 4 speed will be a little exspentsive . the cheapest 4 speed i`ve seen for sale is around 500.00 dollars . you will also need a bellhousing that fits the 390 but not a truck bellhousing it won`t work in the car . it will have to be for a car to work right.

1966 Ford Galaxie 2 Dr. Fastback

Question:
I am currently tearing down a 66 Galaxie 2 dr. fastback and am at the point of removing the windows. The window trim was held on by clips around the windshield and rear window. These small clips have a screw holding them in place and most of them are rusted and or needing replaced. When I inquire for replacements online, they do show the same clips but also a second type clip that doesn't have the screw to hold it in but simply attached around the lip of the window frames and then the window sits on top of the clip. When looking at these different or other clips online (deerborn), they list it as windshield and/or rear window clips for a 66 Galaxie all styles. BUT these clips look nothing like the ones that are currently on my car. The reason for this post is the different clips will be easiler to install and look like they would last longer. Has anyone used these clips other than the screw type clips? Worked out for you if so? Please advise.

Car had 260 V8 now missing, can I replace with a 302 without mods? Trans is a 2-speed Ford-O-Matic.

Response(s)
you did not say what year your 302 is, early will fit (depends on pan), I would swap out the 2 spd for a c-4, you will have to move the trans mount , they have cross members you can buy for this.

Response(s)
dot 3 or dot 4 would be fine for a daily driver but dot 5 is a pure silicone fluid that is used primarily for cars that arent driven a lot it does not cause moisture in your brake system like traditional brake fluid does plus your brake pedal will feel a little spongy feeling if you use it. thats my experience.hope this helps in your decision.

You need dot3 brake fluid.

68 Galaxie XL Convertible, 428 c6

Question:
Just bought '68 Galaxie Q-Code convertible and when I drive it, the rear end seems loose, as-in, a couple of inches loose. Turn the wheel and the body seems to move separate from the rear wheels. Once up to speed, it is stable, but any deflections in road surface, like ridges, cause the need for steering correction. Its as if the rear was loose when unloaded, and as soon as you load it, it takes a set and then its fine and tracks true. Until the steering wheel goes the other way, then it 'shifts' for a moment before it sets and is fine, relatively speaking.

sorry man, i dont think it is. if the car has senamental value. . .go for it i am in the same boat

if you really want the car and are good with a welder and have plenty of time to work on it then try to get it for 1500 to 2000 thats all it is worth in that shape . as far as the rust goes you will need to cut out the rust and replace th rusted spots with new metal . being very carefull not to over heat the area . you will need to use a mig welder to dothe job and move around the area making spot welds until you get area filled then grind smooth

You need to remove the tranny pan and access the pawl from inside the tranny, once you get to it, it is quite easy to change, it is basicaly a small arm that locks the tranny from rotating. I have some photos of when I changed mine if they will help.

1967 Ford Galaxie

Question:
Hello I have a 67 Ford Galaxie that I would like to do a full restoration. I have no experience in the automotive world. The body has some rust issues, the motor and tran will have to be redone. I have most of the interior purchased. The car comes with all the trim and molding they just have to be redone with the bumpers. What should I do first fix and invest in the engine, Tranny or invest in the body and chassis?

Response(s)
I would start with your chassis and work your way up. these cars had rust issues on the chassis under the rocker panels on both sides. so i would lift the car off and make sure you have a solid chassis to work with

The most important part of restoration is making sure that the frame of the car is not rusted through. Someone could have a galaxie pimped out but with a rusty frame it could just fall apart. Check the frame for rust, check the chassis seam for rust, if you can poke a pencil through any of the frame, it needs a LOT of work.

66 Ford Galaxie 500 352

Question:
I am only 21 years old and I have a 4 door 66 Galaxie 500 with a 352 in it. I want to put a 390 with a c6 tranny. Will these parts bolt up directly or will I have to buy motor mounts so it will fit? What will I have to do to swap over the c6 tranny from the original cruisomatic? Where can I find a good place to buy these parts for a good price?

Response(s)
I got a 65 fastback that i put a C6 into, the crossmember will work, but the drive line will need to be shortend and new tranny lines made. the worst part is after the swap the the detents are way off and because of the linkage, park is hard to find in my car. on the cruise-0-matic the park gear is all the way forward and the C6 is forward and up. I put a cable shift b&m shifter on the floor from jegs to correct my problem.

1967 Ford Galaxie 500

Question:
I have a 67 Galaxie I have had for 25 years or more. It's been in the weather and needs a lot of work. The body is still in good condition and the engine and trans are in a garage. What am I looking at to restore it?

Response(s)
I recently performed a frame off restoration on my 67 galaxie. Due to the limited availability of parts for this car it can be rather difficult to locate parts. When you do find parts they are usually expensive. My restoration which was performed entirely on my own ran nearly $15,000. Depending on the level of restoration that you plan to do you may be able to do the job for under ten. I will say that bodywork is the most expensive part of the job so you will be able to perform a restoration for less than 15 since your body is in good condition.

For parts check out dearbornclassics.com 800-252-7427

I also own a 67 ford galaxy I inhareted from my late aunt. I have rebilt 289 and tranny.I have body Cancer issues. I have new radator, shroud. Question:
Hey folks - I'm trying to find out what the proper name is for the black rubber strip that goes between the body and the rear bumper of a '63 Galaxie. Is it a Bumper Seal? Or a Stone Deflector? Not sure how it could be the latter, as it's not really exposed to stones... but maybe I'm wrong. If not, what the heck is a "Stone Deflector"? Thanks for any help - I'm refinishing my Gal right now, and need to get a replacement for this part...any ideas for a decent one? Is there a universal one that can be mod'ed to fit?

Response(s)

1969 Ford xl

Question:
I have a 69 xl 429 4bbl. The car has a Galaxie grill and does not have the horizontal chrome markings on the front fenders. Were any XLs made with these Galaxie features? Maybe it was wrecked years ago and they replaced the grill, but after looking very close I found there is no damage or sign of work or replacement. The Galaxie had normal lights and grill and the Xl had hiding lights. To replace Galaxie lights and grill with XL lights and grill would seem to be a lot of unneeded work. I looked at the build sheet and the car was equipted with optional 8.55 X 15 wsw tires. I know full size mercs often had these but I can't find info on Ford XL's having this option. It is probably a common option but these tires were tall and overly wide for 6.5 wheels. In the car books they metion a $33 tire option but this was a $55 option. It has a good engine but the rear gears were 2.8/1 so it was obviously not ordered to be a performance car...but it seems a bit odd to me. Also, it was made and originally sold in the US, so I don't think it is a Canadian version. Also, I am 99% sure it is not a GT car. It has been repainted so if there were strippes they are gone now. Any info would be very appreciated. I am a big fan of Ford.

1965 Ford Galaxie 500

Question:
I have a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 4 door hardtop with a 390 cid V8; cruise-o-matic tranny. My transmission will not go into drive unless it warm up to around 175 degrees. Why? The fluid is good and at the correct level.

Response(s)
The cruise-o-matic is a band style and when they are old and stretched they have to warm up to get enought swell on the band to get them to grab. Thats what the tranny guys told me when I had the same problem. they talked me into putting a C^ in my car and i had to shorten the drive line and the detents on my column are not correct. i got a cable floor shift from b&m to correct my problem.

I have a 61 galaxie with the same problem i installed a c6 in it i was able to corect my collum shift by shortening the tranny lever.
