1958-1965 All

Question:
Where can I find a chart listing the colors the valve cover(s) and air filter housing were painted for engines from 1958-1965.I'm aware the basic engine components through these years was black, but the valve covers and air filter housing were painted different colors, designating the engine size. example: 1963 "Challenger 260" had Red valve covers and air filter housing, with a Black snorkle and heat stove. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

1967 Ford Galaxie Fastback

Question:
I have A 1967 Ford Galaxie 2 Dr Fastback. When I bought it, I had everything except the headliner. I am in the process of re-wrapping and stretching item from the interior with new vinyl. My question is, when I was taking the headliner trim down to be re-done there was only A metal trim piece across the top of the inside windshield, and trim around the rear inside of the window, but there is nothing along the side above the doors and rear windows. Is there suppose to be something there, or is it a part of the actual headliner itself? I really hope someone can answer this question, and possibly send me a picture of what it is suppose to look like Thanks ARTY!

Response(s)
There is supposed to be a windlace along both sides of the headliner. This can be purchased by the foot from dearborn classics. All it does is slip onto the body.

1963 Ford Galaxie XL500 fastback

Question:
What's involved in putting a 1966 428 with a c-6 in a 1963 XL500? Any help would be appreciated. Does that swap use the stock trans crossmember?

Response(s)
I upgraded the FMX behind the 390 in my "63 Galaxie 500 to a C-6. The trans crossmember will have to move rearward about 4 or 5 inches (and readjust your parking beake mechanism). I did it with the body removed, so it was easier for me. I did it "dirty." I used 2 inch angle iron to support the existing crossmember using the existing holes in the frame bracket. In fact, the front most holes in the crossmember lined up with the rear most holes in the fram bracket - so not much of a shift. I think that you will need a new tranny output yoke, I did not modify the driveshaft.

I have a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 390cid, V8. My transmission will not go into drive unless it warm up to around 175 degrees. Why?

Response(s)
Have you checked the trans fluid level?

Yes...The fluid is good.

your transmission filter is probably clogged get a filter kit and install it its comes with pan gasket and is pretty easy to do

your transmission filter is probably clogged get a filter kit and install it its comes with pan gasket and is pretty easy to do

Internal seal leaking. Try a can of "Trans-X" transmission additive. They have one for higher mileage cars, which is what I used in my 1968 with a C-6. Don't even try anthing else. I got this advise from a Transmission mechanic. He said he would overhaul my transmission, but to try this "Tran-X" first and he was pretty sure it would work. And it did!!!! Available at Autozone

I found the cure for my 65 merocomatic shifting problem. After changing all the fluid three times trying to figure out what they ment by perminant type M-2C33-D why it did shift with the 53 year old fluid and not the type F that was a no no. and then mercon. still would not shift cole till I put a half can of Berrymans in it then I found the fluid it likes. Valvoline full synthetic VV3246. Shifts perfectly now @ 11 quarts per change. So I hope this helps. cheeper than having it rebuilt and works great in my 65 Merc Montclair.

Galaxie 500

Question:
I have a 1963 Galaxie with 352 and w/a 3 speed automatic. I would like to know if a 1969 390 truck motor will bolt up to it. I have already noticed the starters are different. And is there an adapter kit for the bell housing to mate these?

Response(s)
should be a direct swap

Is there an adaptor so I can use a conventional starter in My 63 Galaxie 500 convertible? "352 CruiseOmatic" The starter has along shaft and the starter drive comes in at the back of the flywheel.

Pre- 1965 blocks have different motor mount bolt boss locations. No way is this a direct swap. You need a pre- 65 engine to do this with no modifications. Trust me.... I found out the hard way.

Galaxie 500

Question:
What are the most likley causes for failure of the convertible top to not operate?

Response(s)
Tom, Does the motor make noise, but the top not move? If so, then check the hydrolic fluid lines for a leak or check the reservoir to see if there is fluid in the system. If the motor makes no noise then either the motor has died, the switch is broken or the wiring needs to be checked.

Question:
i have a 1965 Galaxie 500 rear axle, while replacing axle bearing, it came with a solid 1/4 inch washer, the one that was removed was different. But putting the new one in with the washer will rub on the seal. Is the washer required on all models? Will also not let bearing seat all the way in. Any help appreciated thank you!

Response(s)
I think the washer you mention is not a washer but it is a lock to lock the bearing on to the axle. I took a pipe a little larger than the axle and drove the lock down to the bearing, holding it in place.

1962 Ford fairlane 500 . 352 c.i.

Question:
I have a customer, came into my store. Getting a lot of smoke out of the motor. Looks to me, like he has a breather, in the filler tube at the front of the motor. There's a tube bolted to the intake, that drops down the firewall. Shouldn't it vent crankcase pressure? Pretty car, man just got home from defending our country. Like to help him out, let him enjoy his ride! Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Response(s)
The car has the factory set up, which includes a breather cap where the oil goes in on the front of the motor and what is called a road draft tube on the back.

By 1962 the vent tube should be tied into intake vavum i have a 1961 with the same engine. And the tube is tied in to a vacum port in front of the carbutator with a rubber hose and an inline pcv valve.

1962 Ford Galaxie Club Sedan

Question:
How do I remove the rear seat on my 1962 Galaxie? Also, anyone know of a supplier for original moulding clips for the same car? Thanks

Response(s)
Most back seats release like this....I have a 63 Galaxie and believe a 62 is the same: The bottom comes out first. You usually have to push down and back to get it out, there are no bolts holding it in. You may have to take off arm rests for clearance. The top of the rear seat is bolted on the bottom. You have to remove the 2 bolts, then it will slide up and out. Jim in MN

Dennis Carpenter has the moulding trim clips.

Ford Galaxie 500 XL

Question:
I had my engine bored from 352 to 390, the mechanic that put it together went from a mechanical fuel pump to a high flow electrical pump. He also put on an Edelbrock 600cfm carb. The pump seems to flood the carb, and when I try to start the car it only stays on when the key is in the on position. Can anyone give some guidance on my avenue of attack? I'm not a mechanic, but I wasted $5,000 for nothing.

Response(s)
Does the engine start and then die once you release the key?? If so it's probably not a flooding issue, I would look at the ignition. If it was flooding the engine would be hard to start or not start at all (fouled plugs).

Ken, The 2 door hardtop has a flatter roof and the rear window is at about a 45 degree angle. The fastback which I have has a roof that is more sloped like a Mustang fastback and the rear window is probably at 120 degrees. The fastback looks much sportier. Good luck in your search!

I am right there at the finish but I have a problem with the brake booster. It is a bastard booster meaning it is not the common booster. A-1 cardone is telling me this is a rear system. I have a 1968 Galaxie 4 Door Sedan. I was given a 429 cobra Jet engine with a C6 tranny. I'd like to put in it. Has anyone done this and/or are there kits to do this? Thanks!

Response(s)
I did put a 460 with c-6 in my first 67 Galaxie 2D. Motor and trans was from a 73 Lincon. Kinda did it shade tree style. All the mods i had to do was spin the 390 motor mounts, did some grinder modification to the trans linkage, and a 180 flip on the trans mount bracket. Cant remember if it was a short or long tail trans but w/e it was the drive line was same length when i was done. Seems i was able to use the stock exhaust, but know i had dual put on shortly after.

1961 Ford Galaxie

Question:
I have a 1961 Galaxie. Where is the VIN# located. I can't find my title.

Response(s)
Should be riveted to the drivers door or to the firewall. It won't be as long as the new VINs.

There is also a hidden VIN tag on the body, removal of the passenger fender is needed.

Actually the data plate is on the left front door post, up by the hinges. Open the door all the way and you'll see it. That number is probably not enough for the motor vehicles deparment to issue a new title if they need to inspect the car but if it's already in your name and you just need the paperwork they should be able to look it up by that.

63 Galaxie changed the solenoid, now I have no power in the car anywhere. No lights inside or out no power to ignition. WHat happened? Battery is good, tested solenoid just feel stupid right now cause I know it is something I'm over looking. Can anyone help?

Response(s)
you through your fuse box eather under the hood or inside your car the one inside the car is right behind your break pedal try this if anything there might be a relay between your battery and fuse box just follow all wires from battery and make sure none are torn or decade

You most likely put the fusible link power feed on the wrong solenoid terminal or left it off completely. This is the 10 ga. wire with an eyelet that feeds all power to the fusebox, it goes on the same solenoid post that the positive battery cable hooks to.

1968 Galaxie 500

Question:
My break pedal goes to the floor when I start it. I just had engine rebuilt. I did breaks calipers and bearrings today. I don't think the hose on master cylinder is correct my mechanic was really an ass he left me with a mess to deal with and I paid six thousand dollars and got took bad. At least it runs but I can't drive it. I hear air when I push the break while it is not running I haven't had a chance to bleed them yet, but I don't think its gonna fix my problem. Any other ideas after I bleed them? Thank you for your time.

Response(s)
Ok Mark, not sure if this will help but here it goes. Through working on my own 65 galaxie breaks I understand that if the power break booster is working it WILL pull the pedal down further when the pedal is being pushed and the car is started. If this does not happen your power break booster is not working. Second, the galaxie has a single circuit break line system. Meaning that the whole entire system works together (and fails together) at the same time. you need to get ALL of the air out of the system. Third, AND MOST IMPORTANT, if you have 4 wheel drum brakes (as I do) drum brakes are NOT self adjusting as brake calipers are. You MUST adjust the brakes evenly and all the way around in order for the brake system to work properly... otherwise you will run out of pedal travel BEFORE the brakes start slowing the car down. Hope this helps. Mike.

in 1968 it is a duel system

1965 Ford Galaxie 500 LTD

Question:
I have acouple of questions. I just purchased a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500. The frame is eaten up pretty good on the sides by the doors, but the rest of the frame is in very good condition. Should I cut out and replace the eaten up parts, or go ahead and replace the whole frame? Also anyone have any websites that may help me on locating parts for my Galaxie? I am restoring it on my own and am new to this so any pointers are greatly appreiciated! Thank you. Patrick

Response(s)
My '65 galaxie 500 frame was the same way, and was completely rotted at the passenger trailing arm frame box. I luckily came across another 65 donor car and switching the body to the new frame was very easy... and I found out just how bad my frame was. Literally the body was holding the frame together. I would definitely find a southern car in a junk yard and switch the complete frame out. If that is not possible remove the body from the frame and rework the frame. Removing the body is not as hard as you would think. BE CAREFUL opening the doors while the body is off of the frame as you do not want to buckle the body anywhere. Hope this helps. Mike.

59 Galaxie sunliner w 352

Question:
I have a 352 motor and I'm told the carb is gonna need to be replaced. It looks like it is a 2bbl and I know there was a 4bbl option. I don't know where to begin. Should I upgrade to the 4bbl and if so do I have to change intake, and/or anything else? If I wanted to do some upgrades should I look at other things too? Does it make sense to bore out, etc. Also what are the proper engine colors for the 352?

Response(s)
Rob, you would need a new intake manifold to step up to a 4b, but I would advise against doing only that. If your engine has the bore, stroke and pistons to match a 2b carb, putting a 4b on it will likly just dump more gas into it than it can handle and your performance will be worse. If you are going to rebuild the engine, there are certainly things that can be done to match it up with a 4b carb.

When my engine gets warm it is hard to start if I shut it off. Cold two pumps and it fires, warm I have to hold the pedal to the floor and after about 30 seconds or more it will fire up. Any answers to why it might be like that? Thanks

If your battery is flat the clicking is the solenoid in the starter motor.Check the battery first up. If battery is fine check the leads have a good connection so full volts can go to the starter motor. If those two are ok then start questioning the starter motor itself.........

Long question, I am replacing the stock 289 c-4 with a 1984 351W C-6. I found a bucket seat interior with console and floor shifter. Problem is, the shifter arm on the c6 has park as the forwardmost position. The pivot on the floor shifter is the opposite. 1968 Galaxie 500 / 390 FE 6.4

Question:
I've been having problems with my neutral safety switch finding the sweet spot so it will crank. Well, once I got it started today while I was driving the starter engaged on its own as if I was trying to start it. So I stopped to shut the car off and when I turned the key off it kept running. Then my dash lights went out. Well the starter stopped after a few minutes so I drove home. While driving home my dash lights went out but would come back on when I used my turn signal and would go back off after my blinker kick off. When I got home it wouldn't shut off when I turned the key off so I had to take the breather off and put my hands over the carb to smother it. Now when I try to start it my dummy lights come on, but won't start or click or nothing. What do you think my problem is and were do I need to start? I can work on cars but I've never had this problem before. Thanks for any info.

Response(s)
Check your body ground, i suspect its bad

had a 66 galaxie 500 that when i changed headlight switch it fried my voltage regulator didnt know that at the time and the crazy stuff started like turn signal on horn would blow and such as you said crazy things started happening, cheap fix around 10-15 bucks may need to be done anyway if original.

63 Ford 2 door sedan

Question:
Does anyone have a sure fire way of removing the thin stainless strip(without damage) that attaches to the rain gutter just above the windshield on a 63 Ford sedan?

Response(s)
Take one of the post trim pieces off (screws on the inside of the door jamb) as that piece interlocks with them. The trim above the window has clips that slide into the lip of the trim. I was able to use a flathead screwdriver, stick it in under the trim near the edge and twist to pull the trim of the top or bottom lip. Do that for each clip, some wiggling will need to happen. Be patient, it's a tad time consuming but worth it.

On the 289 V8, what make/model 4 barrel carb was installed or available from the factory in 1964? What is the correct air cleaner and color for a 4 barrel carb on the 289 1964 Galaxie? Is it the same as on the Mustang - are they interchangeable (both carb and air cleaner)?

Response(s)
Autolite carbs were installed for the 289 and I think the 390 as well.

Start at the beginning are you using the standard two barrel manifold? If so the factory used an Autolite 2100 2V (2 Barrel)
